About Thai Hom Mali Rice
Thai Hom Mali rice, also known as Thai Jasmine rice, has a long history in Thailand. Different local landrace varieties of Hom Mali rice were grown throughout the country and had various names, such as 'Khao Hom', 'Hom Mali', and 'Khao Mali'.
In 1945, a farmer in Lam Pradoo district, Chonburi province, discovered the best Hom Mali local variety. Then, in 1951, 199 panicles of this variety were selected from a neighboring district in Chachearngsoa province for pure line selection. The chosen variety, known as "Khao Dawk Mali 4-2-105" or "KDML105" for short, was officially named due to its superior physical appearance, cooking quality, and grain aroma.

More about Thai Hom Mali Rice
KDML105 was made available to farmers in 1959, and since then, Thai Hom Mali rice has been produced annually from around 4.3 million hectares of land, yielding approximately 9.4 million tons of paddy rice. KDML105 is characterized by its tall and floppy architecture, with an average plant height of about 140 cm. It is also sensitive to photoperiod, which determines its flowering date around October.
When the day length is shorter than 11 hours and 52 minutes, KDML105 initiates its floral organ. This sensitivity to day length is advantageous for lowland rainfed rice, as it allows it to adapt and produce without the need for irrigation water. Typically, the full bloom of KDML105 occurs in the last two weeks of October, and harvesting begins in the second week of November each year, coinciding with heavy rainfall in September.
